Having naturally curly hair is sometimes one of the hardest things to grasp. Once you do, BAM it's like you won the lottery! With having naturally curly hair myself I've learned these tips and trick below have worked the best for me. I've passed them along to my clients and they have also falling in love with the techniques. Here’s how you begin…
1- Wash your hair but concentrate at the scalp. I prefer to shampoo wash hair twice especially if it’s been a few days since I’ve washed my hair. The first shampoo is to cleanse my hair from the previous product build up and the second one is to cleanse my scalp.
2- I know this is going to seem unorthodox but hear me out… Apply your conditioner to your mid- length and ends. Tilt your head over and start scrunching your curls back into your hair. (If you have snarls in your hair take a wide tooth comb and comb it out but then re-scrunch your curls back in after combing your hair). Alright, now read this part CAREFULLY, YOU WILL NOT I REPEAT WILL NOT BE RINSING OUT YOUR CONDITIONER. (Don't worry your hair wont be weighed down by leaving your conditioner in it, remember you're scrunching it in so you're not applying it at the roots and if there is excess conditioner it will come out as you scrunch.)
3- When you go to wrap your hair in a towel instead of going for your body towel… grab a 100% cotton t-shirt or a microfiber towel to scrunch your curl. A 100% cotton t-shirt or a microfiber towel is going to leave your keep your cuticle sealed, which is important because that is what causes your hair to frizz.
4- STOP… DON’T... WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T grab that comb or a brush! After you get out of the shower you won’t take a comb or brush to your hair. The reason why is because you’re disrupting your curls. When you disrupt your curl pattern you elongate your curls so they wont be as curly and could cause frizz.
5- Take your curl product ( I like more cream based products to keep my curls looking natural and soft) and scrunch it into your hair. I also like to spray in a texturizing spray at the roots to get a little more volume.
6- If you like to let your hair air dry you’re done! If you diffuse your hair it’s that time! I like to concentrate at the root first because more moisture is accumulated at the roots. The ends will dry up fast than your root will.
VIOLA! You're all set! I hope at least one of these will help you be able to style your natural curly hair with ease!
